Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to study the purchasing process. Students will learn the philosophy and practice of an integrated supply system as part of the firm's strategic planning as opposed to a purely tactical orientation.  This course will present a balanced approach to the importance of transportation logistics and purchasing. It will discuss multinational corporations, Business 2 Business, and electronic – Internet supply chain management. Purchasing is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Purchasing, not just those covered in this course.

Common Course Learning Objectives/Outcomes

  2. Be able to identify, analyze, and understand buyer-supplier relationships, cross-functional teams, quality management, cost of ownership, and Electronic Commerce.

  3. Analyze new product development, specifications and standardization, procurement process, and purchasing services.

Course Policies

Attendance/Class Participation

Regular and punctual class and laboratory attendance is expected of all students.  If attendance or compliance with other course policies is unsatisfactory, the instructor may withdraw students from the class.

Withdrawal Policy

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that his or her name is removed from the roll should he or she decide to withdraw from the class. The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.

Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate for that course.

State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. With certain exceptions, all course withdrawals automatically count towards this limit.  Details regarding this policy can be found in the ACC college catalog.

Incompletes

An instructor may award a grade of“I”(Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. An incomplete grade cannot be carried beyond the established date in the following semester. The completion date is determined by the instructor but may not be later than the final deadline for withdrawal in the subsequent semester.

Statement on Scholastic Dishonesty

A student attending ACC assumes responsibility for conduct compatible with the mission of the college as an educational institution. Students have the responsibility to submit coursework that is the result of their own thought, research, or self-expression.  Students must follow all instructions given by faculty or designated college representatives when taking examinations, placement assessments, tests, quizzes, and evaluations.  Actions constituting scholastic dishonesty include, but are not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, fabrication, collusion, and falsifying documents. Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to help the buyer understand his or her role in the new millennium.  Retailers are faced with numerous challenges and they must broaden their horizons if they are to survive.  This course will also look at global merchandising, NAFTA, GATT, and making certain their companies are positioned to maximize consumer purchases.  Retail Buying is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Retail Buying, not just those covered in this course.

Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to help students develop skills that can be immediately utilized in the field of sales.  This course will focus on the principles of selling and provide sound partnering and communication skills.  It takes an integrated approach in combining theories with practical application.  Principles of Selling is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Principles of Selling, not just those covered in this course.

Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to offer cutting-edge thinking on Advertising including "new" media options such as Advertising on the World Wide Web and explain how advertising works in the real world.  Advertising and brand promotion is a large part of the rise in consumer and Advertising culture.  This course provides a solid understanding of fundamentals and provides a structure for understanding why much of conventional wisdom in Advertising is no longer working well.  Principles of Advertising is not just about textbook learning: it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Advertising, not just those covered in this course. Advertising is a global business that reaches across national and cultural boundaries.

Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to introduce and examine the evolution of retailing into a global, high technology industry.  The retail industry is experiencing tremendous change and students must be prepared to work in an environment where state-of-the-art management practices are the norm.  This course addresses the emergence of new retail formats by thoroughly discussing electronic retailing.  It also reviews global retailing, consumer behavior, and customer service.  Students will learn descriptive information, how-to-information, and conceptual information.  Principles of Retailing is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Principles of Retailing, not just those covered in this course.

The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.

The purpose of this course is to prepare the student to identify the marketing mix components in relation to market segmentation; explain the economic, psychological, sociological, and global factors, which influence consumer and organizational decision-making processes; and interpret market research data to forecast industry trends and meet customer demands. This course will help students develop the understanding and skills necessary to become successful marketers.  This course integrates the IMC approach, and places an emphasis on decision-making. The purpose of this course is to provide a detailed look at Electronic Commerce for anyone who is consideriing starting, expanding or working for a business on the World Wide Web.  Electronic Commerce describes the manner in which transactions take place over networks, mostly the Internet.  This course describes what Electronic Commerce is; how it is being conducted and managed; and its major opportunities, limitations, and risks.  Electronic Commerce is an interdisciplinary topic, and, therefore, is of interest to managers and professional people in any functional area of business.  Short case studies and virtual web site visits (with analysis) will be extensively utilized in the learning process.  Electronic Commerce is not just about textbook learning: it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Electronic Commerce not just those covered in this course.

Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to help students develop skills that can be immediately utilized in the field of sales.  This course will focus on the principles of selling and provide sound partnering and communication skills.  It takes an integrated approach in combining theories with practical application.  Principles of Selling is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Principles of Selling, not just those covered in this course.

The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.

Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate for that course.

State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to assist students in learning about consumers in a variety of ways: individuals, families, social beings, and cultures.  This course will provide a local, regional, national, and global approach to understanding consumers.  This course will also look at why consumers purchase certain goods and services and how those goods and services satisfy them and why they are attached to their possessions.  Various theories and tools will be incorporated into the course in order to help students thrive in a global marketplace.  Consumerism is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Consumerism Buying, not just those covered in this course.

Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate for that course.

State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. An instructor may award a grade of“I”(Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the opportunity to apply concepts learned in the classroom to a real-world work environment.  It is normally the most valuable course that students take because of the synthesis between work and school.  It also gives the student an opportunity to display their abilities to a potential employer or to obtain expanded responsibilities from a current employer.

The purpose of this course is to survey the world of fashion businesses. The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.

Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate for that course.

State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. Incompletes

An instructor may award a grade of“I”(Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. An incomplete grade cannot be carried beyond the established date in the following semester. Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to give students a thorough knowledge of textiles.  This course uses fabric swatches from actual industry samples and those swatches are integrated into the assignments.  The combination promotes a better understanding of textiles.  This course also addresses the ever-changing nature of textiles brought about by technological changes.  This course also incorporates the industry's global perspective and the interdependence of worldwide trade.  Upon completion of this course students will have a thorough understanding of the science of fabric as it relates to textiles.

Regular and punctual class and laboratory attendance is expected of all students.  If attendance or compliance with other course policies is unsatisfactory, the instructor may withdraw students from the class.

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that his or her name is removed from the roll should he or she decide to withdraw from the class. The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.

Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate for that course.

State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. With certain exceptions, all course withdrawals automatically count towards this limit.  Details regarding this policy can be found in the ACC college catalog.

Incompletes

An instructor may award a grade of“I”(Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. An incomplete grade cannot be carried beyond the established date in the following semester. Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to help the buyer understand his or her role in the new millennium.  Retailers are faced with numerous challenges and they must broaden their horizons if they are to survive.  This course will also look at global merchandising, NAFTA, GATT, and making certain their companies are positioned to maximize consumer purchases.  Fashion Buying is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Fashion Buying, not just those covered in this course.

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that his or her name is removed from the roll should he or she decide to withdraw from the class. The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.

Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate for that course.

State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. Incompletes

An instructor may award a grade of“I”(Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. The purpose of this course is to develop skills in the creation of showroom or retail store window/interior displays that are designed to sell merchandise.  Visual merchandising is the presentation of merchandise at its best and students will gain a solid understanding of how to color coordinate, accessorize, and display merchandise that will cause the customer to look and buy.  It is important to distinguish one store from another and an emphasis will be placed on creativity and originality of design.  Visual Merchandising is not just about textbook learning; it challenges students to use their critical/creative skills in all aspects of Business and Visual Merchandising, not just those covered in this course.

Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the opportunity to apply concepts learned in the classroom to a real-world work environment.  It is normally the most valuable course that students take because of the synthesis between work and school.  It also gives the student an opportunity to display their abilities to a potential employer or to obtain expanded responsibilities from a current employer.

Regular and punctual class and laboratory attendance is expected of all students.  If attendance or compliance with other course policies is unsatisfactory, the instructor may withdraw students from the class.

Withdrawal Policy

It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that his or her name is removed from the roll should he or she decide to withdraw from the class. The instructor does, however, reserve the right to drop a student should he or she feel it is necessary. If a student decides to withdraw, he or she should also verify that the withdrawal is submitted before the Final Withdrawal Date. The student is also strongly encouraged to retain their copy of the withdrawal form for their records.

Students who enroll for the third or subsequent time in a course taken since Fall 2002, may be charged a higher tuition rate for that course.

State law permits students to withdraw from no more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges or universities. With certain exceptions, all course withdrawals automatically count towards this limit.  Details regarding this policy can be found in the ACC college catalog.

Incompletes

An instructor may award a grade of“I”(Incomplete) if a student was unable to complete all of the objectives for the passing grade in a course. Course Rationale

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the opportunity to apply concepts learned in the classroom to a real-world work environment.  It is normally the most valuable course that students take because of the synthesis between work and school.  It also gives the student an opportunity to display their abilities to a potential employer or to obtain expanded responsibilities from a current employer.
